RTG’s Democracy Development Experience with NGOs and Syria

As the CEO of Red Telescope Global (RTG), I have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of robust democratic institutions and effective governance. For NGOs and government agencies dedicated to fostering democracy and human rights, RTG offers a compelling model of success. Our work in Syria from 2016 to 2022 highlights our expertise and dedication to these crucial areas, providing a blueprint for transformative change that can be replicated globally.

RTG’s involvement in Syria began amidst the devastating civil war, characterized by widespread human rights abuses and a breakdown of democratic norms. Partnering with the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) and various civil society groups, our mission was clear: empower local leaders, foster civic engagement, and support the development of inclusive political processes.

One of our primary initiatives was the leadership training and capacity building for SOC leaders. We provided intensive training focused on communication strategies, media engagement, and organizational planning. This empowered the SOC to effectively represent Syrian opposition interests on the international stage, particularly during crucial negotiations in Geneva and Astana.

In the wake of the 2018 Syrian local elections, we also supported local councils in al Kasra and Tal Abiyad. These trainings emphasized democracy needs assessments, community communication, and coalition building, ensuring that new local leaders could effectively address their communities’ needs.

We took a significant step by facilitating the establishment of the SOC’s first office in al-Rai. This office became a hub for outreach activities, community engagement, and direct support for Syrians affected by the conflict, providing a critical link between the opposition and the local populace.

Engaging the Syrian diaspora was another key aspect of our strategy. We coordinated efforts with the Syrian diaspora in Turkey and Europe, recognizing the unique dynamics and challenges faced by these communities. By bridging the gap between Syrians inside and outside the country, we helped to unify efforts against the Assad regime and foster a cohesive opposition.

Additionally, our collaboration with local groups to document human rights abuses in Deir ez-Zour and other regions was important. This work supported international advocacy efforts and laid the groundwork for future transitional justice initiatives.

RTG’s success in Syria demonstrates our ability to operate effectively in complex and volatile environments. Our holistic approach, combining strategic analysis, capacity building, and grassroots engagement, ensures sustainable impact. NGOs and government agencies looking to strengthen democracy and governance worldwide will find a reliable and experienced partner in RTG.

At RTG, we believe in the power of democracy to transform societies. Our work in Syria is a testament to what can be achieved with dedication, expertise, and a clear vision. We invite NGOs and government agencies to join us in our mission to promote democracy and good governance. Together, we can build a more just and prosperous world.

The challenges of fostering democracy and governance are immense, but so are the rewards. RTG’s experience in Syria provides a powerful example of what can be accomplished with the right approach and partners. If your organization is committed to making a difference, RTG stands ready to support your efforts and help you achieve lasting, meaningful change.
